Beauty and the Beast Will Return to CW in May 2014

At the TCA (Television Critics Association), there has been some major revelations. One has been that FOX will no longer participate in pilot season. Another is that the CW wants to renew The Originals, Supernatural, Reign, and The Vampire Diaries and give Veronica Mars a spin-off web-series. But what about Beauty and the Beast? We all know it’s going on “hiatus” in March 2014 to make room for The 100 and Star-Crossed. When will it return for its potentially final 6 episodes? After winning two People’s Choice Awards last week, is the CW really going to disappoint its legion of devotees? Well, according to Entertainment Weekly, it may be coming back sooner than expected. Apparently, the CW president Mark Pedowitz has decided to let the show finish its season starting in May 2014 after all of the full season shows have aired their finales. No exact date has been set. Also, we do not know which night it will be on or moved to (we’re guessing Monday evening is out of the question now). We do not even know if it will last six weeks or if they will air the episodes like they did for Cult in June 2013 where they do two hour blocks for three weeks (on a Friday, no less).

The bigger news is that the CW has not decided what to do about BATB, or the other low-rated CW series, The Carrie Diaries in terms of cancellation or renewal. No official decision has been made, but they usually give early renewals if at all and that is not going to happen for BATB. We will probably find out for sure in May sometime during or after upfronts. We should not assume that it is completely over yet. They may decide to give it a short final season, like they did for Nikita or sell it to Netflix for future seasons, but I doubt they will give it a full season order ever again. I am still surprised that they are even going to still produce all of the episodes they ordered for this season after seeing the ratings for this week, so we should be grateful for what we can get.
